Marche Couvert

Marche Couvert literally translates to covered markets in English. France has an overwhelming selection of shopping options not only for apparel and accessories but also for food and fresh farm produce. Most of these covered markets date back to the olden days when they were less market and more places of social interaction.

There are many open and one covered market in Metz Lorraine that offers fresh agricultural and dairy produce along with a range of meat, fish and poultry items.

The market located opposite the Cathedral was essentially the Bishops Palace but is used as a covered market today. Stalls set within the concrete building sell both fresh produce as well as ready to eat meals that can be had on one of the many simple tables and chairs strewn across the floor area. The food is simply delicious in a number of International flavours such as Greek, Asian, Mediterranean, and African together with a menu of Parisian. Vibrant flowers, meat, poultry, fish, cheese, baked goods, groceries, wines and fresh agricultural produce vie for shelf space in this huge market that instantly transports you to the France of old.

The regulars inside the market have speciality stalls for German beers and groceries, Portuguese sausages and dried fish among other regional stalls due to its close proximity to other European towns.

The open area largely concentrates on flea market stalls while the fresh produce and meat shops are found inside. Prices are reasonable and arguably less in comparison to some of the other new markets around the city. The Marche Couvert also sells products from other countries of the world and has some satisfying dining options to offer in the vicinity.

Covered markets are a museum of trade and agricultural commerce and you cannot leave Metz Lorraine until you at least walk through the Marche Couvert once.
