The city of Metz is located in the northeast of France and it is the capital of the Lorraine region. Metz is located at the confluence of the rivers Seille and Moselle. The Metz residents are known as Messines. Metz is a scarcely visited but delightful city lying in the Lorraine region and is all ready to hit the tourist map as the brand new Centre Pompidou-Metz museum has opened.

As the magnificent and dazzling Centre Pompidou Metz museum opened its doors to the public this little known city in France suddenly became a hot weekend destination. It is only 80 minutes away from Paris in a TGV ride out. It is completely friendly and absolutely unlike any tourist places. It is still not geared up for the arrival of many tourists from around the globe. However similar to Lille that was all of a sudden discovered and later became the European capital of culture; Metz is somewhat like a hidden secret. It has many great bistros and gourmet restaurants, nightclubs and bars and places for shopping.

Next to the cathedral in Metz, Marche Couvert is an old and grandiose covered market. It is one of the oldest in France and was originally built in the year 1785 as a living palace for the Bishop of Metz. However unfortunately for him, the French revolution started before he could move in to it and later the locals decided to convert the building into a food market. The Madame Mauricette is a feisty and famous Metz personality. There are about six tables outside the market stand and it is an institution for sampling the delicacies in the Lorraine area, serving pate with Mirabelle plums, cured ham, local cheese, pork brawn, fresh salad and saucisson. Right next door is another equally good Le Temps des Soupes which serves 20 different soups every day.

Metz may not yet be a shopper’s paradise but it is worth checking out Rue des Jardins situated in the heart of old city. You can find a few bargain antique shops and a hip handbag store with items from owners such as Pierre and Karine. There is also a new concept store which combines local clothes designs to the clubbing ones. There is also a futuristic coffee shop and some exhibitions of interior design occur which showcase young artists.

These are some of the major shopping attractions that can be found in Metz Lorraine.
